Q&A: Are Vegetarians Slimmer?

QUESTION: If I become a vegetarian will I lose weight?

ANSWER:

Being a vegetarian can definitely help you slim down but you will still have to keep your meals healthy and balanced and watch your calories.

If you switch to a high caloric diet you can possible gain weight and make things worse by missing out on protein, calcium, iron, vitamin D and omega-3 fats.  These are all things that we get naturally from meats.

A common problem for vegetarians is eating too much high fat cheese and pastas and bread loaded with carbs.  This is a pitfall you should avoid.

Don’t confuse the statistics with reality.  On average female vegetarians weigh 11.5 percent less then meat eaters, but this isn’t just a result of the diet, but more of the fact that they are watching their diet.
Just the fact that they are keeping an eye on what they are eating brings awareness which helps them keep a more accurate calorie count.

A balanced healthy diet will help you slim down regardless if meat is included or not.
